Lionel Train Town Ultra

Throughout my childhood, I can remember my dad having a pretty great old model train set he'd put together over the years.

As years went by, there was no longer room for that set, so it went into storage. We ended up substituting a train set game on the Tandy for the time we'd spent on the real thing. It sure didn't meet the same standards.

Sierra's game features over seventy missions, all geared towards the younger set. Some of the harder missions are difficult even for someone my age to figure out. Generally, the missions center on moving cargo from location to location. It can get kind of confusing moving the boxes in the right direction, compensating for the lack of room at the end of a track, and adjusting your cars correctly. Of course, time is of the essence, and if you're speed is too fast or too slow you may cause an accident, or not finish the job in time.

The controls are easy to learn, and the tutorial got me into it quickly. While I'd say this is the perfect train game for a younger kid, it does lack one features I'd have liked to have seen. I would have liked to have been able to make my own tracks. Who knows where the trains would lead to!

Overall, it's a worthwhile game for the kids, but it probably won't keep an older person's attention too long. I will confess blowing the whistle was probably my favorite task in the entire game.
